Poker Strategies

Online poker is not a game of chance. You must have a strategy as you match wits against opponents and bring home the pots for each game. In online poker games, an important rule to remember is the best cards don’t always win the most hands. Your strategy must involve knowing how much to bet, when to fold and how to analyze the cards and other players at the table. After you have mastered basic rules of poker, focus on how to correctly play each hand to maximize your percentage of winnings.

Practice Analyzing Cards Quickly

Online poker moves at a much faster pace than traditional table play. Dealing and shuffling are automated which allows for a higher number of hands played per hour. To bet with confidence, you need to know how to read the flop, turn and river cards quickly. Place your bets quickly to avoid showing any weakness to your competitors. Don’t only consider what possible winning combinations you have in your hand, but what other players are holding as well. Determine if a player could possibly be holding a straight or a flush based off of the cards appearing in the flop. The possibilities help you decide whether it is worth holding onto your hand or not for the rest of the betting rounds. Note many poker sites have a time limit which requires the players to act during a certain timeframe or their hands are automatically folded. Plus, not moving at a quick enough pace is sure to annoy your table companions.

Take Notes

On many online poker sites, you’ll find a “notes” section on your dashboard where you can write down tidbits from the games you play. You can make a note of other players’ betting patterns while tracking your own play. If you haven’t been winning, you could go back and review your notes to find a betting pattern that doesn’t seem to be working for you. While you’re taking notes, look for obvious tells from other players. This may include a rapid check from another player at the table. This could mean the player has selected an auto-check option for the round and a significant bet could push the player out of the hand. If you have a solid hand, you could attempt to extract money from the players with suspected weak cards by placing nominal bets at each round to keep them playing.

Play the Percentages

Don’t play a crappy hand. If you are dealt a two and a four of different suits, fold the hand instead of hoping something comes out in the flop. The majority of the time, you’ll want to stay in the game if you have a high ranking pair or suited cards such as a jack and queen when the cards are dealt. As a beginner player, you are better off playing tightly instead of making large bets with nothing in your hand to back it up with. However, don’t always play the same way each online poker game. Mix it up. Other players may be observing how you play and will know how to read your bets and beat you during future competitions.

Note Table Position

Your order in betting should be another part of your strategy when playing online poker. Play rotates around the table in a clockwise direction with the dealer placing his bet last. When you’re in an early betting spot, be tight and only play high ranking cards. If you raise the stakes early on, there is a good chance another player will raise again and you may be throwing away your bet. Late players have more freedom with their bets and should play all pairs, suited cards and suited connecting cards. If there doesn’t seem to be any action happening with any of the players in front of you, you may even decide to play a very weak hand.

Number of Poker Players

The size of the poker game affects your strategy to win the pot. If you’re only competing against a small group, you may be able to play more aggressive, especially if other players seem to be relying on a tighter style of poker play. In games with a large number of competitors, you may want to switch styles and play tighter. In these cases, wait for a good set of cards to enter the fray since you must beat out a large number of hands to win. Plus, a large table is likely to have several aggressive players who make outrageous plays to push out the weakest players within the fewest hands possible.

Money Management

An essential component of online poker playing is to know how to correctly manage your funds. If you bet all of your money on a single game of Hold ‘Em and lose, it will ruin your chance to have fun with the wagering. Review the blind amounts and betting limits before you enter an online poker room. Getting into a high stakes game as a way to win fast money isn’t smart. You have to be able to lose the money you’re betting in order to make the right decisions during each round of betting. If you lose a hand or grow angry at an opponent at your online poker table, take a break or switch tables. Playing on your emotions is how many poker players win and you must know when to quit before you lose more than you can afford.

Unlike live poker, you can’t read someone’s facial expressions when playing a game of Texas Hold ‘Em. Instead rely on basic poker strategy rules to best everyone at your table. Until you hit your winning streak, practice your strategies at tables with lower blind amounts or enter into tournaments with entrance fees that cost only a few dollars. Also, if you want to win remember to only play when you’re in the right mindset and can completely focus your attention on the game. Being a smart online poker player means you’re a rich online poker player.
